Helping our children develop good character is equally (if not more so) as important as setting them up for academic success. One of the most important character traits you will hear parents refer to regularly is gratitude!
The easiest and most effective way I know of to foster gratitude in children is through sharing stories! Books are a great place to find examples of the miracles and power of gratitude! As you read aloud to your children, they absorb the lessons learnt by some of the most interesting characters. Instilling in them, examples, models and the benefits of being openly thankful, greatful and even thorough the biggest of adversities.
If you are looking for some stories that will promote discussion of and inspire gratitude in your children look no further! Here is a list of our families favourites!

2 More Gratitude Books for Homeschool ParentsToo!
At first glance the first book of the two may not shout out to you ‘gratitude’. Yet, it is very thought provoking on the topic. The power of gratitude is exactly how the people in this true story managed to keep their heads above the water and dealt with surviving some of the worst circumstances you can imagine. This is not a book for the weak hearted and certainly not for young children. For parents however who will come face to face with different struggles in our lives, this woman’s story is a gift!
This book is firstly a reminder to be grateful, I hope, that you have never had to endure anything of this magnitude. Secondly, that with a positive mindset and appreciation for all the good in your life you can over come any challenge your faced with! Yes, even the Kindergartener who’s in meltdown due to a lack of sleep or the loss of his favourite toy!
The Hiding Place by Corrie Ten Boom
The second book I am recommending to you is ‘The Secret’ or in fact any book by Rhonda Byrne. Her work is not specifically aimed at homeschoolers or parents but I promise you that what this woman has to share with you, will help you in every aspect of having a successful homeschool journey fuelled by gratitude!
