Why Your Child Should Learn About Word Choice!

We all know just how powerful words can be and it is important our children understand the importance of word choice too!

I am sure you have been witness to the effect that words can have on a person’s mood, confidence and mental health. Simple words of praise such as “You’re great at keeping your home organised.” can lift a mothers’ spirits! Equally something along the lines of “Goodness me how will you manage all of that!”, can have the opposite effect and there are also those words that are more appropriate to use with close friends than in formal settings or words that bring about action!

We should all be teaching our children to be mindful of how they make themselves and others feel!

How we speak to each other and which words we choose to use are the key to effective communication!

Effective communication is such an important part to our children’s success in the future. Through work and our personal lives, communication is essential and when it comes to building healthy relationships with friends and family communication is key. We have to communicate with others in almost everything we do!

Since we live in an environment where socialising is almost unavoidable and in times where global communication is quicker and easier than ever before, it is essential that our children understand the impacts of the words they choose to use!

How Reading Teaches your Child About The Importance of Word Choice!

As you read with your child, they will experience an array of emotions. Sadness, joy, anticipation, upset, anger, empathy and compassion are some of the feelings, that the written word can evoke. A great story can hold your child in suspense, anticipation and even create excitement or nervousness!

The more your read aloud to your child, or provide them with time to enjoy reading books on their own, your child’s awareness will grow. They will begin to see that with carefully thought out sentences, word choices and structure, authors can create an entire picture in a person’s mind. As a child becomes more aware of how words can come alive and alter one’s thoughts, they will begin to understand the impact words can have on others.

The two ways in which this occurs:

1. Discovering how words affect their own thoughts and feelings.

2. Observing the thoughts and feelings of the characters in a story.

You will notice not only does a child’s vocabulary grow as you read together but the way they express themselves and talk to others will change too.

How can I be so sure?

The Proof Is in The Pudding!

Although I have read a lot over the past few years about the benefits of reading with young children, I didn’t realise the true depth of it until I had experienced it for myself!

When we arrived at the hotel in Luxor last year, M was observing the pretty patterns in the tiles on the floor and looking at his surroundings. I could see his eyes widen as he grabbed my attention and said “Oh wow!…Mum it’s exquisite!”

“Errr what did he say?! Where did that come from?” I thought to myself! His expression just made me laugh out loud. “What?” M said looking amused and confused. “That was a funny thing for you to say! It is beautiful isn’t it?” I said.

“Like in the story! That word makes me happy.”

I can’t remember now what it was we had been reading. It may have been Anne of Green Gables. For whatever reason however, the phrase “it’s exquisite” provoked something in M and had clearly left an impression. That feeling was passed on to me during our discussion!

The Effect His Word Choice Had On Me!

What M didn’t realise, was that I was a little stressed, focusing on making sure we had everything sorted and were checked in and I hadn’t even stopped to notice the beautiful details on the tiling, the furniture and the attractive lighting! Those two words stopped me in my tracks, opened my eyes and were the perfect start to the amazing trip we had!

If you read daily with your children, from a variety of books, I think you’ll be amazed at the vocabulary they will accumulate over time. Even more so, you may be surprised by the words they choose to use and adopt to express themselves and communicate with others!

Word choice is an important part of helping our children to thrive socially in communities now and as they grow. Allowing them plenty of time and space to read a variety of books, is one way in which we can do this!
